Cricketing history in your country 1

Summary

This project builds writing, research and communication skills, and develops an understanding of history of the partner country. It focuses on how cricket has developed in the two countries over a period of time and highlights some important cricketing personalities and events. Each class creates a quiz about the history of cricket in their own country which will include visual elements. Using the knowledge they have gained from the quiz and additional research each class will produce a document about the history of cricket. They then exchange ideas about the similarities and differences regarding how cricket has developed in the two countries. This project is part of the Chance to Shine project. There are five cricketing history in your country projects on eLanguages.

Matching dates and events

Pupils are divided into groups and given a set of dates and events from their country's cricketing history. They use a web site provided for them or library books to match the dates and events.

Timeline

Class work in pairs to take one of the events from the first stage to design a powerpoint slide. Perhaps the children could read the statements and save these as sound files or include movie clips and sound bites from BBC news. They could add more information after research or just use the original information from the information cards. These slides are then collated by the teacher into one file to create a slide show of events in cricketing history to swap with their partnership school.

Combining timelines

Pupils now compare the timelines from their own and the partner country. Print out the individual powerpoint slides and display them in the classroom so comparisons can be made.

History quiz

Use the timelines to design questions for the quiz to test the partner's knowledge of cricket in both countries. This could be in the form of videos with the children asking the questions or a word document of questions.
