I'm head of the English language department at the Gymnasium Vaterstetten
and I'm looking forward to working together with you and your school. We
are actually three teachers who would like to work with your school.
Two of us are in senior classes (16 to 18 years old), but we have some
junior classes, too. Have you already thought about a project? We are just
getting started. We have a lot of German material from our school home page which we can send to you.
Could you please give us a link to your homepage.

since we are 3 teachers and each of us would like to do his or her own
project we'd like to ask you whether some older pupils (age group 15-17)
at your school (beside your your group at the age of 13) would also be
interested in doing a project with our older ones. It doesn't necessarily
have to be a whole class.

our school is in Baldham, which is east of Munich. It takes about 25
minutes to go to the city centre of Munich by train, so actually we are
very close to Munich. Our school has about 1200 pupils and 90 teachers, so
we are rather big. The British Coucil is planning to do the international
meeting here at our school before Easter, so we hope to welcome you here.
As far as the project is concerned:
Perhaps we could start to exchange material, which we could give to our
pupils to work with (e.g. school time tables, descriptions of projects
which you probably did in former times together with your pupils, etc.).
I am doing this project with pupils who have been learning English for six
years, so they are able to understand quite a lot. Perhaps we could get
the pupils to write emails to each other to find something out about our
schools. What about your plans?

The reply function seems to be working now so I thought I would reply to
you properly!!
Unfortunately I did not see my group today so I will not be able to start
with them until next week. We will try to get our ideas together and send
you some resources soon.
In the meantime perhaps we could get our thoughts together with regard to
what we would like to do.

Hi Jill,
I'm Karl and I'll be working with the younger age group, collaborating
with
an other teacher called Alexandra. Alexandra's class is first year and
mine is second year English (i.e. 10 to 12 years of age).
The initial talks with my group showed that they have got the same
interests as the older Vaterstetten pupils. How should we set up the
project?

I am still not quite sure how to get organized and start our project, but
last lesson I asked my pupils what sort of questions they are interested
in. Here their proposals:
- Stundenplan der englischen Schüler
- typischer Tagesablauf?
- schulische Angebote?
- wie sieht der Deutschunterricht in England aus?
- auch Koedukation?
- wie viele Sprachen lernen die englischen Schüler?
- gibt es Mittagessen in der Schule? Gibt es eine Mensa oder eine
Cafeteria?
- wie sehen die Uniformen der Schüler aus?
- dürfen die Schüler bestimmte Fächer selbst wählen oder sind alle
Fächer
verpflichtend?
- Nach wie viel Jahren schließt man die Schule an?
- wie sieht das Deutsch-Abitur aus?
- Wie oft und welche Art von Prüfungen gibt es?
- Welche Sportarten gibt es an der Schule?
- Gibt es Schulfeste?
- Dürfen sich die Mädchen in der Schule schminken und Schmuck tragen?
- Gibt es einen Schüleraustausch, wenn ja, mit welchen Schulen?
- die Geschichte der Schule
- Gibt es Schulstrafen?
- Wie viel Hausaufgaben bekommen die Schüler durchschnittlich?
- Gibt es auch Unterricht am PC?
- Werden auch Themen wie "Charles und Camilla" im Unterricht angesprochen?
- Werden von der Schule aus auch Ausflüge gemacht?
Solltest du zu dem einen oder anderen Thema Unterlagen haben, wäre es
schön, wenn du mir diese über die Platform schicken könntest. Dann
hätte ich mit den Schülern schon mal was zu bearbeiten.
Kann ich dir auch irgendwelche Materialien zukommen lassen??

Hi Jill,
the idea of a powerpoint presentation sounds very good. I've got some computer specialists in my class who would be very keen on doing such a thing. Some of them also work for our school homepage. Perhaps we could agree on certain topics, what we would like to present and how. My pupils would love to take digital photos of our school or even make a short video. If you do the same, we could exchange them, because I would like to present your school on our school homepage, and both schools on the platform, of course. Some of my pupils have already sent you emails, perhaps we could also get our pupils to interview each other about certain topics. They have a lot of questions!

Glad you like the idea of power point. I have started work with my class
today and they are very excited about the project!!
We have taken all the questions that your group prepared and we have
divided them into topics eg. school uniform,rules and
regulations,timetable,school dinners etc and the pupils will work on these
topics in groups of 2 or 3. We will let you know how we get on.
I would also like to use the digital camera and take a video which would be
a good way for our groups to get to know each other and each others
schools.
My colleague Emma McBride is willing to work with your colleagues who want
to work with older pupils and I will give you her e mail address. Perhaps
they could e mail her direct to give her some ideas or write on the
platform

ich denke, wir sind auf dem richtigen Weg. Ich habe heute die restlichen
Schüler meiner Klasse gebeten, eine email an dich zu schreiben, damit sie
Email Partner bekommen, um sich mit diesen auszutauschen.
Meine Idee ist, das unsere Schule eventuell eine Powerpoint Präsentation
über eure Schule macht und umgekehrt eure Schüler über unsere Schule.
Somit sind die Schüler gezwungen, sich mit dem englischen bzw. deutschen
Schulsystem auseinanderzusetzen. Die nötigen Informationen, Bilder,
Materialien u.s.w können wir uns ja gegenseitig über die Platform
mailen. Ich denke, dass dabei das Alter der Schüler nicht unbedingt eine
Rolle spielt, aber vielleicht könntest du bei der Erstellung der
Powerpoint Präsentation ja mit deiner Kollegin Emma MyBride
zusammenarbeiten, es wäre sicherlich auch interessant, wenn ältere und
jüngere Schüler zusammen ein Projekt machen. Was meinst du dazu?
Meine 11. Klasse mußte sich heute mit dem britischen Schulsystem
befassen,
um in der nächsten Stunde am Freitag darüber Referate zu halten. Ich
kann dir die Ergebnisse gerne schicken, vielleicht könnten deine Schüler
sich auch die Ergebnisse anschauen und eventuell verbessern.
Danke für die Bearbeitung der Fragen meiner Schüler. Die Antworten
könnten wir zum Beispiel schon mal in unsere Präsentation mitaufnehmen.
Haben deine Schüler auch Fragen, was unsere Schule anbetrifft und die
meine Schüler beantworten könnten?
Es wäre schön, wenn du am 14. März nach München zur Internationalen
Konferenz kommen könntest. Gibt es schon Pläne?

PS. Bis jetzt haben wir meistens auf Englisch geschrieben weil wir so wenig
Zeit haben. Kannst du mir veilleicht eine Liste von den Emailaddressen
deiner Kindern geben? Ich glaube es ist viel schneller wenn ich es mit der

Dear Jill,
it doesn't really matter whether you do your project about your school or
about our school. I just want my pupils to do something about your school
since I want them to deal with the British school system. So it would be
very helpful if we can get photos of your school, maybe a typical English
timetable and all sorts of material you can give to us. This week my class
has worked on the British school system, they had to find out something
about private and state education and about British examinations. So it
would be great if you could send us a typical German GCSE or A-level exam,
my pupils would be very interested in it. One of my pupils has already got
an email partner, so I asked her to interview him about your school.
I am very glad that you are going to come over to the conference. It will
be very interesting. There will be enough time to talk about the project.

Hi Christine,
No I only have about 5 e mails so far. In my original message I actually
meant for you to e mail me any information from your pupils rather than
their addresses. I have read my message again and I can see why you have
misunderstood it. It wasn't very clear. I'm sorry about that. We could
still do an email exchange though but I have found that a Steckbrief works
quite well because we can then pair the pupils up with someone with the
same interests. I'll bring some with me that you can give to your class.
I have heard that the weather is very cold in Munich! Is that right as I am
just trying to decide what to bring with me? Do we need to bring anything
special to wear for the "dinner" on Sunday evening as the word dinner
sounds quite posh in English?????

es ist in der Tat sehr kalt im Augenblick, bring also warme Kleidung mit.
Da wir auch sehr viel Schnee haben, brauchst du feste Schuhe. Ich denke,
dass der Abend am Sonntag sehr ungezwungen sein wird, du brauchst also
nichts Besonderes zum Anziehen.
Unser Projekt können wir ausführlich am Sonntag und Montag besprechen,
auch wenn nicht allzu viel Zeit ist.

Hi there folks.
I've restored your forum to it's rightful place.
The reason it went missing has to do with the number of columns on the
page.
Basically, each item or resource on a page is associated with something we
call an anchor which specifies where the item will appear when
inserted into the page template. This allows us to format pages in one or
two column mode (or more complex arrangements like the site home page) by
having different page templates with anchor points in different places.
The forum was associated with anchor number two on this particular page,
however, the template associated with the page only had one anchor point.
Imagine the page template is a map and the anchor a set of coordinates to
a point on the map and you'll get the idea.
To get the forum back I restored the two column template, cut the forum
from the second column, pasted it into the first column then switched back
to a single column template.
Sorry if that was a bit technical as an explanation. What this does show is
a problem when a page is changed from a two anchor layout to a layout with
only one anchor point. The system should either warn you that content
will be hidden or it should reorganise the content so that it all fits
into the new page format. I'll be talking to Ralph about how we can sort
this for the future. Thanks for bringing this to our attention and sorry
for the inconvenience caused. I'll let you know when a fix is in place
via the main feedback forum.

POINTS FOR WHOEVER HAS REMEMBERED THE MOST INFORMATION
2)YOU COULD WRITE QUESTIONS ON EACH TOPIC FOR THEM TO ANSWER
3)YOU COULD WRITE A WHOLE SERIES OF TRUE /FALSE STATEMENTS ABOUT THE
INFORMATION IN THE SLIDES WHICH THEY ANSWER
4)PUPILS COULD TAKE IT IN TURNS TO READ OUT THE INFORMATION ON EACH SLIDE
TO THE REST OF THE CLASS AND ANOTHER PUPIL COULD ACT AS AN INSTANT
INTERPRETER SUMMARISING THE INFORMATION IN GERMAN.
5) PUPILS COULD CHOOSE ONE OF THE TOPICS AND MAKE A COMPARISON WITH THEIR
OWN SCHOOL EITHER IN GERMAN OR ENGLISH
I THINK YOU WILL AGREE THE POSSIBILTIES ARE ENDLESS AND WE HOPE YOU REALLY

Liebe Jill,
meine Schüler haben diese Woche ihre Presentation fertig gemacht und ich
habe diese heute auf die Plattform geladen. Sie haben sich sehr viel Mühe
gegeben und versucht, deinen Schülern einen Einblick zu geben in das
Leben und dem typischen Tagesablauf unserer Schule. Das ganze Projekt hat
den Schülern sehr viel Spaß gemacht und ich denke, dass sie dabei auch
sehr viel gelernt haben. Wir erwarten mit Spannung eure Präsentation.
