The effect of sleeping habits on the academic acheivement of students

Summary

This project is built on the hypothesis: Bad sleeping habits (like going late to bed at night, and then sleeping in the afternoon) affects the academic acheivements of students in a negative way.To test this hypothesis, we are going to conduct a survey, collect data, and analyse it using statistical methods that our students are familiar with.(Scatter diagrams, box and whiskers,..). As a matter of fact, I taught in Saudi arabia for two years, and now am teaching in qatar this year and i noticed that lots of students have problems with sleeping habits in these two countries. The participation of different countries in this project is vital to prove that this correlation is a global one.

Do bad sleeping patterns cause a problem with concentration?

At this stage, the students can interview (preferably videotaped interviews) fellows who have problems with their sleep patterns, and others who have problems with concentration. This could be a warm up activity to make them realize the problem. (The following are some useful links about this topic.)

Designing a questionnaire

Attached below is a Questionnaire that was prepared by our students. Actually I was thinking that it would be so interesting if the students of the participating school would fill our questionnaire and send us the data to do the analysis, and vice versa. In other words, we expect from the partner school to prepare a questionnaire that we are going to fill and send back.

Collecting the data.

The questionnaire should be distributed to an unbiased sample of 16+ students.

Data analysis

The students participating in this project will decide on the method(s) they want to follow at this stage.

Publishing the results of the study.

(Again this is also left for the students to decide on.)
