CLASS XI – The topic for the class XI is to do the research about the existence of the  Golden Ratio ф (phi) in architecture. The class was divided into 7 groups.

Each group has to do the research to find the existence of Golden Ratio in

the architecture of the monuments in  one of the following regions of the

  world, Chosen at random.

    MATHEMATICS  IN BEAUTY

An exhibition of international projects and models of monuments of different countries and different aspects of nature given to each group was on display on 11th nov,2010.The exhibition provided a unique  international experience to every child of the school by opening various windows of opportunities to explore mathematics in beauty in the world around it.

         Display included countries like

France, Australia , USA ,UK,  China, Middle east countries ,   Brazil, South America as well as India.

The  students impressed the visitors with their in depth   knowledge about the existence of phi ratio in architecture of the various monuments of different countries and also the existence of phi ratio

In the natural aspects of the world like flowers,  leaf arrangement, seed

    Arrangement in flowers and fruits,

Human face and body  parts, beehive,

    Pinecones, shells,etc

All the students in the exhibition wore

T-shirts  painted by themselves based on phi ratio to include the art aspect of the project.

The costumes and the presentation of the students were well appreciated by the chief guest Prof. Hukum Singh, Head of  Mathematics and science department ,NCERT, Members of the managing committee ,visiting students and teachers of various schools.

The exhibition wore a festive look with the galaxy of monuments from different parts of the world ready to take visitors on an excursion to explore beauty in mathematics.

The project will deal with the structure of monuments, structure of the flowers, arrangements of leaves and the arrangements of seeds in the fruits. The students would thus be able to establish a direct relationship between golden ratio and symmetry which leads to beauty.

The tenth grade students will choose 2-4 kinds of flowers/ plants in their vicinity including their national flower and will work on the following aspects of the project:-
• Identify the flowers/plants/fruits.
• Research on the structure of flower/plant /arrangement of the seeds in fruit (if any)
• Find the ratio of the arrangement of petals/ leaves/seeds
• Compare this ratio with the golden ratio φ.
• Study the similarities/ discrepancies between the two ratios.
• Research on how the golden ratio influences the beauty and symmetry of the flowers/plants/ fruits

The eleventh grade students will choose 2-4 monuments / buildings in their country and will work on the following aspects of the project:-
• Identify the monument/ building.
• Research on its architectural design.
• Find the ratio on which the basic structure of the building/monument stands.
• Compare this ratio with the golden ratio φ.
• Study the similarities/ discrepancies between the two ratios.
• Research on how does the golden ratio influence the beauty and symmetry of the monument /building.

The project duration :- April to September 2010.

I ,zenia dutta, am doing this project with my students of class 10 and class 11.

class 10 students are doing the project individually  on existence of golden ratio in flowers, seed arrangement or arrangement of leaves, human face.

class 11 students are doing group project on existence of golden ratio in architecture for instance historical buildings of various countries.
