I am a supply primary teacher - usually Lambeth and Southwark schools. The reason I am doing supply teaching is to enable me to do voluntary work in schools in Nigeria at least once a year. It was during a trip to Nigeria in February 2008 that I had the idea to link up schools in Nigeria with schools in London through the DfID Global School Partnerships programme. My parents emigrated from Nigeria (to London) many decades ago and I was born and raised in South London.

In order to co-ordinate this school partnerships project, I am liaising with the British Council, the Enugu State Ministry of Education, UKOWLA and the Cambridge Education Foundation. The Global Gateway team at the British Council will be finding the UK partner schools and Mr Ifeanyi Onah from the Enugu State Ministry of Education is responsible for co-ordinating the project in Enugu State. These school partnerships are under the DfID Global School Partnerships programme and funding is available for reciprocal visits.

Greycoat Hospital School (Victoria, London) was the first school to join the project in July 2008 and is linked with a rural school called Community Secondary School Ebe (Enugu State, Nigeria).

In June 2009, I led a team of 7 other UK teachers on an Area Partnership Visit to Enugu State. This visit enabled the partnership teachers to meet face-to-face and exchange ideas on teaching and learning. The UK teachers had opportunities to learn about Igbo customs and traditions, teach some lessons, attend staff meetings and work on joint curriculum projects.

During July and September 2009, another 11 UK schools were partnered with Enugu State schools, bringing the total to 17 Enugu State links and one Benue State link.

"On behalf of my school, the principal and the entire members of Premier Secondary School Ukehe, I, the Partnership Teacher wish to write and express our Joy and readiness in this School Partnership. I am ever ready to provide you with necessary information as far as this Partnership exists. I equally promise that you will enjoy the relationship as the knowledge to be shared will be thrilling, exciting and enjoying. Thanks and God bless."
